WHAT’S GOING AHN

Every week, PGH will post any buzz, news, rumors and mumblings that we hear about going on.  It will not be restricted to just ‘power pop’ because we’re all fans of many different kinds of music, naturally.  Check in here, put the fingers down on the digital flesh and take a quick pulse of what’s cool ‘n happening.

If you hear any breaking or interesting news, by all means – get in touch! Just go to “Help” at The Dashboard area)

==============================

Week of October 2nd

JELLYFISH’S TWO ALBUMS TO BE RELEASED ON VINYL -It’s great to be a Jellyfish fan these days.  First, there’s the breaking news of biography on the band shipping in mid-2012 and now, the news that “Bellybutton” and “Spilt Milk” are being reissued on colored vinyl.  Two different colors – blue for “Bellybutton” and purple for “Spilt Milk”. 180 gram vinyl and limited to 1,500 copies each.

It was originally scheduled for November but it’s now coming out in January.  Go HERE to get the latest news.  I pre-ordered my copies on Amazon – I could not get the label’s ‘Shop” button to work for me.

BLEU – B-Sides & Rarities compilation to be released on Super-Limited Vinyl -Was on Bleu’s site, purely by chance, the other day and…BOOM!  Found THIS.  150 gram, deluxe limited edition(300 copies) album of a collection of b-sides, rarities and alternate versions coming out in early November.  I just ordered a copy so, theoretically, there are 299 copies left. ;-P  Get on there – right here, right now

If you supported his Kickstarter campaign this past summer, you may miss this on the site because it’s easy to miss – go this link for a special offer to folks who committed to his upcoming project.

DWIGHT TWILLEY – New album dropping on October 4th – No denying:  Twilley is on a roll the last few years with reissues of rarities, new albums and specialty releases.  The momentum continues with a new studio album out on Varese Sarabande on October 4th.  Sadly, it’s an album that will not feature longtime Twilley lead guitarist Bill Pitcock  IV on it – he passed away earlier this year (read about it HERE)

Order direct from the label – HERE

SMILE – It’s the REAL “Smile” experience coming to visit your home –  Okay, we waited for over 30 years to hear the ‘real’ “Smile” and we got a selected tasting early last decade.  Now, comes THIS – 5 CDs / 2LPs / 2 7″ singles, Three-dimensional shadow box lid and a 60 page bound book.  You ready to part with a cool $140 or so?  Ponder HERE

Now, if you REALLY want to ponder and go BIG – this is the ultimate limited edition set.  This one comes with a Limited Edition Exclusive Autographed SMiLE Light Up Box + Limited Edition Exclusive SMiLE Surfboard Custom Made By Hobie.  Smile(and laugh) away and Declare Bankruptcy HERE

DOUG POWELL – New (amazing) Album picked up by Yep-Roc and supposedly released! The thing is, I can’t find any link to share with you to pick it up so I can’t confirm this!

This I can talk about:  Ex-Not Lame artist Doug Powell self-released “The Apprentice’s Sorcerer” back in 2010 – a unusual stage magic, philosophy, theology and experimental rock/electric rolled into a concept record.  Pure, unfettered Doug.  While the hard-core, somewhat myopic power pop fan may not ‘get’ what Powell does on this release, trust me, when I say that’s a gripping, challenging and vital release that has a sound aesthetic not approached by any power pop artist that I’ve heard.

I’m beyond a ‘fan’ – I believe Doug is a rare genius on all fronts of humanity.

Keeping it in the Not Lame family, another Not Lame artist of the past, Mark Helm, wrote the new liner notes on the Yep Roc version.

CD Baby for CD or download – HERE

I can’t resist – Doug wrote a fascinating book on Christian apologetics a few years back – check it out at Amazon – HERE

TITAN RECORDS – “It’s All Pop” Deluxe 4 LP Vinyl shipping on October 11th!

A few years ago, The Numero Group released a 2 CD set that compiled all the songs connected to infamous, influential power pop label, Titan.  Now, in late 2011, they’ve announced an 4 LP deluxe version of the release.  How cool is that?! It’s got an expanded booklet that is a full 12″ X 12″ and adds new photos, a new epilogue and printed in two-color spot.  The big deal is this: there’s NINE extra tracks that will be added to this version. How COOL is that?!  Oh yeah, said that already – but, hey, I’m geeked!  Pre-Order direct from The Numero Group – HERE  It’s ain’t cheap, but it sure will be special and a totally unique piece of music art.

MATTHEW SWEET – New Album with with B-sides Bonus Disc shipping direct from Matthew’s site –  A new studio album and the cuts they’ve leaked sound great, but I’m sucker for Sweet and easy to please.  So the idea of ordering direct from his site and get a B-sides bonus disc along with digi download of the album for $20, I was ‘all in’.  There is a vinyl option, of course.  There are four different versions you order – go HERE

I had forgotten that Mathheew Sweet’s latest was coming out. Just ordered it and downloading the digital content now.

Strike one for PGH getting us to buy stuff!!

  2. PHILIPPE THIVILLIER says:

Doug Powell’s self-released “The Apprentice’s Sorcerer”is an awfully bad album, I’m sorry to say. God knows I loved his previous albums but this one is barely listenable!

    • dudeman says:

I do GET that, Philippe – I do. It’s just SO different for the sensibilities of a lot of power pop folk. There’s only one song that connects itself to his past, arguably. It’s just coming from a very different place(like Nine Inch Nails, in many spots) and flexing a different set of muscles. If I was doing Not Lame still, my caveats would have been very clear. ;-P and let folks listen to soundbites before chomping down on the ‘buy’ button……that said, it *really* grew on me but that first listen? Man, I was like “Doug…..huh?” (he warned me…)

  3. Ethan Franzel says:

I would love to hear more info about the Jellyfish bio! Spilt Milk is what brought me to Not Lame (finding the box set was like finding the Holy Grail!!!), and I’ve had both Jellyfish albums at the top of my power pop list ever since. I was fortunate to catch Roger and Jason open for (and play with) Cheap Trick (also at the top of my list), and it was incredible!

    • dudeman says:

You’ll be hearing a LOT about the Jellyfish project, rest assured – make sure you check out the Works In Progress post on the book – Later in October, we’ll be making the first big announcements and start sharing some of the details with were the project is at – and bring you all into it. Craig(the author) and I really want to hear from fans, especially their personal stories as we move into the formal stage of laying it all out…..right now, the guestimate for release is mid 2012.

  5. Ray Gianchetti says:

The new Dwight Twilley CD is called “Soundtrack”. As its name implies it is just that! There’s a documentary being made about Dwight, and this is the music he’s composed for it. It’s GREAT!!! We’ve got it in stock and ready to ship @ Kool Kat!

    • dudeman says:

Good to know…I’ve not heard it and need to connect w/ DT to get a copy to get a review up here. Let us know the KK link and I’ll hot link it here…..

  6. Stephen Curtis says:

Mike Viola’s new album, Electro De Perfecto, is being released on CD and vinyl Oct 4th. Yay! It’s been about 3 years since he released, Lurch! Here’s the second track on the album, Get You Back. AMAZING!

I agree – THIS is HUGE for many of us. I have no doubt, it’s going to be killer from Mike……

    • Peter Weinzettl says:

  8. Eric Abrahamsen says:

Nice to see the Micheal Stanley Band album in the corner. 😉

    • dudeman says:

Ahhhh, Eric – you are the first to notice! With my videos that you’ll be seeing frequently, there will be occasionally a contest or some clue to be used at a later date w/ the albums AND books(on the shelf behind me).

Good show! Can you identify the album next to it?

Btw, this is one of my fave MSB albums – “Damage Is Done” just does it for me, as does “My Town”.

  9. Eric Abrahamsen says:

Kevin Raleigh added so much to the MSB sound and ‘Damage Is Done’ is a beauty. ‘Greatest Hints’ from 1979 is my fave MSB album and the Jonah Koslen off-shoot Breathless and their two albums are excellent.

I didn’t care much for Raleigh’s solo ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ which was mired in overblown 80s production and poor material..

Didn’t recognize the other sleeve although I did spy a Swingers LP on another clip…
