THE MODULATORS – Surprise Box 21

Posted on 12 January 2012

It’s one of the joys of being a music geek always on the prowl to come across a band that, despite all your years of experience and owning so much music, to come across a band you’ve  missed and wonder “WHY on earth have I never heard of this band?!?”

Back in 2011, The Modulators, were one of those bands for me.

Hailing from New Jersey, The Modulators have been playing their brand of power-pop for over 30 years!  Their 1984 LP Tomorrow’s Coming had been an out-of-print collectable until August 2011 when koolkatmusik reissued it with 3 bonus tracks from various singles.  More recently, David Bash of International Pop Overthrow had it at #39 on his Top 75 reissues for 2011.   Obvious influences of The Modulators include The Beatles, Marshall Crenshaw, The Byrds, and Buddy Holly.  They’ve played as far away as Liverpool at The Cavern Club, to Boston, MA and they continue to perform throughout the NJ/NY area.

I’d only heard the fab “She’s So Cynical” before you turned us on to this one, Bruce. We definitely need to hear more from these guys.

Great live band too. One of the highlights of the Liverpool IPO.
