Ralph Covert & The Bad Examples are bonafide semi-legends in the world of Illinois power pop for over 20 years releasing a whole bunch of excellent albums. Their second album from 1991 “Bad Is Beatutiful” is #138 on the list of the Top 200 power pop albums of all time as featured in the book “Shake Some Action: The Ultimate Power Pop Guide”.
The track here is from their strongest release in, literally, 20 years. It’s called “Smash Record” and…you should own it. Enjoy the lead off track right below.

Why is it Illinois is home to so many great power pop bands? It really is a bit uncanny. Being a Hoosier myself, I tend to think there’s something about the Midwest in general that makes all of us – from Ohio to Kansas – the epicenter of the genre.
Yeah, I’ve often said the same thing to myself about Chicago and the entire Midwest, Stu. But, then I think of all the great music coming out of Norway, Sweden, Australia (Sydney & beyond), London, Boston (MA), Nashville, NYC, L.A., etc., etc., etc. It’s just more reassuring to know that Power Pop is alive and well…all over the world!
Cool track. Great feel and a appreciate the lyric that makes this a fine example of meta-music (no, not meta musil…or metal music, but meta-music, which is to say…music about music).
Great song….love the Styx version of Bad Examples NOT DEAD YET!
Cool song. I’ve been listening to Ralph’s World since my kids were born. But for some reason I haven’t really investigated his work with the Bad Examples. I think that’s gotta change. I also like the track on last years IPO comp.
