THE SHORT STORY OF NOT LAME RECORDINGS:
In November 1994, I was going up the main ski lift at Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado. It was the first day of the season and the night before more than a foot of snow had dropped from the heavens. The month before my wife and I had burnt out with life in Los Angeles, where I ran a hair care company and had worked in the music business doing band management and a cool stint at IRS Records.
We sold everything in California and arrived in Aspen to re-boot our lives.
That day, near the summit of Aspen Mountain, alone on the lift with snow falling everywhere adding the previous nights white glory, I had the spark of an idea IGNITE!
“Bruce…do something for yourself. Start your own record label. Why not?”
Indeed, why not.
What should I call the label? What kind of music should I focus on?
By the time I arrived to the top of the mountain, my very first view of my new home at its highest point, the first name to pop(sic) into my mind – ended up being the ONLY name that I would pursue to call this still-nebulous idea of ‘a record label’.
The Name? NOT LAME RECORDINGS
“That’s IT!” I got off the lift, took a look at the transcendent, 360 degree view of Colorado Rockies and proceeded to head towards the chalet, take off my skis and search for a pen and napkin to start writing my ideas down.
Quickly, it all came. I wanted a label focusing on music that I completely passionate and knowledgeable about and a genre that was under-served, as well. AGAIN, “THE ANSWER CAME QUICKLY” from universe – “POWER POP” would be Not Lame Recordings’ calling.
There were plenty of punk, metal and indie rock labels already but not a single label dedicated to ‘power pop’ in 1994 that I was aware of. PLUS, I was already very active trading cassette tapes(remember!?!) with fellow power pop fans from all over the world from inside America Online’s online boards. There were some bands I was already in touch with(as a fan) who were making some amazing music who could not get arrested.
The Journey Began. By March 1995, I had my first two CDs and a 7″ vinyl EP released(from Chicago power pop legends, PEZBAND) and, by the end of the year, the following had happened:
A. I put Not Lame’s first version of a website, which in the mid 90s was not an easy thing to do! B. Not Lame had mailed two printed catalogs of releases from dozens of indie power pop bands and labels from all over the world(because I could not release everything I loved!)
C. The label was off and running with a schedule for at least five new CDs due to come out in early 1996!
Early on, Not Lame had the chance to work with power pop legends like Dwight Twilley, The Toms and Doug Powell. A few years later, bands like the Posies, Jellyfish, Tommy Keene, Hawks, Blue Ash and many more would arrive to the stables of Not Lame Recordings.
By the time it all ended in 2010, Not Lame Recordings had released over 100 CDs, printed 11 mail order catalogs that carried thousands of power pop-related releases and its web site had sold over $6 million of power pop. Those 16 years were continually exciting, exhausting and…exhaustive!
