PGH PODCAST – Episode #4 – 1979-1981

Every month or so look for the latest episode in the POP GEEK HEAVEN Podcast series.

Each show will have a different theme that will appeal to the ‘pop geek sensibility’ and explore some of deeper, less explored areas and corners of the ‘power pop’ genre.

EPISODE FOUR , by chance,  just sort of happened.  I pulled a bunch of CDs off the shelf and all of them were between 1979-1981.  Thus, we have this latest podcast’s loose subject matter.

Please let me know what you think of this one and post below.   If you’d like me do a few more podcasts focusing on this era – both major label and indie/DIY – I can get that together next month.

Let me know your thoughts.

PGH Podcast #2 will talk about  Roy Sundholm, Scot Wilk & The Walls, The Keys, Alda Reserve, Darling, Fingerprintz and Skafish.

This was my high school years as well,so I am most fond of this era of songs.Scot Wilk was the only artist from this episode that I was familiar with. Its a wonderful surprise to discover these other songs, they absolutely blew me away.Living in a small town in North Western Ontario deprived me of exposure to a lot of these songs. You have my vote for putting together a few more podcasts from this era.To me its some of the most pioneering powerpop around.

I, myself graduated from high school in 1981. Cincinnati apparently played mostly mainstream stuff in those days. I have heard the Keys stuff and thought it was very good. I was into the Cars and The Knack and Romantics. With the advent of MTV in college I was turned on to the likes of Marshall Crenshaw, Translator, Men At Work and others. I enjoyed the podcast Bruce and I’m all for hearing more. I’m also hopeful that you might consider one pre-Not Lame book on Power Pop and touch on the 70’s and 80’s, with the pioneers like the Raspberries and Badfinger (all time favorite here). I’m always itching to find something I may have missed such as Blue Ash. Thanks for all of your hard work and time.

I was doing Community/college radio every day in at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. Our favorite was locals Angels with Dirty Faces/Dirty Angels/White Chocolate with Charlie Carp. The band in all forms played at a little local spot called the Center Restaurant and were really good. We had White Chocolate open for none other than The Raspberries at a renegade concert on the Fairfield Univ. concert (just after Scott McCarl joined) Fortunately-because I was the music director for the station-I was with them in their dressing room. Nothing was weird about them (no brown only M & M’s or anything like that) Eric was a pick standoff-ish, but all were nice and put on a great show. Wally rocked out.

Just moved and am without my turntable for a bit – so thanks for the option. Will listen immediately.

  5. Telegram Sam says:

A great listen – I am far from an expert on this specific type of music so the exposure is greatly appreciated as well as the facts/context of the bands and their output.

Is the song obsessions of you by skafish acyually on here? Seems to me you only played Introduction & Joan Fanclun.
