Thanks Bruce! Fun to hear you talk about Imperial Drag, I bought it right when it came out back in ’96 and I can remember hearing “Boy or a Girl” on one of the local radio stations at that time. Funny, it never caught on (like practically everything else I listen to).

Imperial Drag was one of those CDs that immediately appealed to me. I’ve also found it to be a fun headphones album. So many good tunes on it, but if I had to pick my favorites, I’d choose “Breakfast by Tiger (Kiss It All Goodbye)”, “Zodiac Sign” and “Spyder”.

Your mention of MP3.com was cool. I made only one purchase from them, a collection of 9 songs by Millard Powers. And I really liked it. Millard was at one time in The Semantics with Will Owsley. Will invited me to stop by before a show at the Fine Line (Minneapolis) back in 2003. He was touring to support his solo CD “The Hard Way” and I remember meeting Millard at that time. It was a great show, of course.

I just realized that Will signed a copy of “The Hard Way” for me. Reading the signature now…it is sad that someone so gifted took his own life.

…and no I don’t love Kenny G…I just haven’t got my damned avatar changed.

I’ll be doing a special video to explain it better in the next week or two and link to it in the update email. Many are still confused that are not used to blogging and others don’t care. Shee, I sure would be if it was me! ;-P

    • dudeman says:

Yeah, for me – despite completely LOVING Jellyfish(which is obvious to those of you who know about Not Lame releasing the “Fan Club” box set and me mortgaging my house to get that out), Imperial Drag is, in so many ways, more ‘me’.

When it came out, it hit me HARD. Of course, I thought it was going to be HUGE.

Uh, it was not. Another example of ‘the masses’ having completely shitty taste. ;-P And yr right, it’s a headphones album. Roger does that, doesn’t he!?

Millard Powers: Yeah, I bought that one, too! I’ll dig that out for folks here when I see it next! Ahh…but Will, though. So incredibly sad. I’d like to find someone to write an indepth article on this work – so pass along the good word w/ anyone who 1. interested and 2. passionate about Will’s work and willing to do a bit of research…..

  2. Ned Hibberd says:

Bruce, I gotta say, I am a huge fan of Jellyfish as you know. But for me all the right ingredients never gelled in Imperial Drag’s CD. Then I heard the demos (downloaded them from Weed several years back) and I thought most of the songs that were demo’d but not included on the album were far superior. I never understood how songs like Gypsy Sister got left off the disc.

    • Ned says:

And no, I don’t like Kenny G either. I been framed!

    • dudeman says:

Agreed, Ned w/ some of the stronger material being left off the debut but it’s very possible that material was written after the first album came out – not sure of the time lines w/ them. Btw, to get rid of Kenny G – just go to: http://www.gravatar.com and register(which will take 30 seconds) w/ the email you registered w/ PGH with – it connects up your image that you upload to you email WITH any post you make(anywhere on the net)…..and POOF. Kenny G. is obliterated!

  3. Gary Maher says:

Yeah, the Imperial Drag demos are a treasure trove of unreleased gems.

Mention should also be made of Love Bang, which featured Eric Dover pre-Jellyfish and recorded a CD way back when that was not released until just a few years ago. You can hear a sample of my favorite Love Bang song on this really cool website I found: http://www.notlame.com/audio/cdlovebang101.mp3 . Interestingly, there’s an Imperial Drag version of the song with a much better bridge, no doubt written by Roger Manning, King of the Bridges. Great stuff.

  4. Steve VanWieren says:

As a ditto Jellyfish uber-fan, I was intrigued when I bought Imperial Drag, but I was not disappointed at all. It was definitely different than all the other crap on the radio, and I liked it. Still like it. In fact, I bought Sextus – Stranger Than Fiction, and thought there were quite a few of those songs could have been Imperial Drag songs.

I’m excited about the new website!
