DEAD GIRLS

Lawrence, KS-based power pop powerhouse The Dead Girls (featuring former members of Ultimate Fakebook and Podstar) just got back from SXSW as part of the Midcoast Takeover event. The Dead Girls’ 2012 7-inch single (and digital download) “She Laughed a Little” b/w “It’s All Happening” features two new tracks that show the band continuing to perfect the ultimate balance of energetic dual-guitar rock and sincere pop.

“She Laughed a Little” was recorded as a one-off number between albums, and the band wanted to give it separate attention because it sounded like a hit record. This is a nonstop joke for The Dead Girls since radio doesn’t really play aggressively-played pop rock anymore, especially songs that sound like they might have been written in 1967. The b-side “It’s All Happening” turned out way better than it had any right to. The band hunkered down in the basement for four hours with friends Justin Pierre (singer/songwriter for Motion City Soundtrack) and JD Warnock (The Blackpool Lights, The Creature Comforts) just to see what would happen and ended up with a catchy rocker that manages to have both urgency and a loose, it-could-go-off-the-rails-at-any-moment quality.

Recent past history:

After two years of recording in five different studios—where the heat was shut off mid-winter and the basic tracks for half the album were erased—in 2010 the band released “Out of Earshot,” an album that showcases The Dead Girls’ tuneful songwriting and top-notch musicianship. The year before that was a busy one for The Dead Girls, who self-released two EPs and opened up for artists like Brendan Benson, Motion City Soundtrack, and Kiss—yes, that Kiss.

The band was formerly known as Dead Girls Ruin Everything—a name they hated and changed, but ironically won accolades from Dave Eggers’ The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2007. Their debut album, “What A Perfect Ending” (Reignition Recordings, 2006) was produced by Descendents/ALL guitarist Stephen Egerton.
